The January 2023 Breakfast Series took place on the morning of January 26th. The return of the well-loved series kicked off focusing on ESG (Environment, Social, Governance). Taking place in South Burnaby and hosted by BC Hydro, this was the first Breakfast Series since 2019. Due to the past few years’ limited social gatherings and events, the Breakfast Series was sensibly paused. With much success and feedback on how useful these events have been in the past to the food and beverage industry, BC Food & Beverage was thrilled to start it back up in 2023. If you missed the January Breakfast, do not worry… we will be hosting a few more to discuss different topics throughout the year!
What happens at the Breakfast Series you may ask. Well, it’s pretty simple – it’s the perfect opportunity to hear from an array of knowledgeable speakers and panellists, and enjoy a delicious buffet breakfast while networking with industry peers. There are also a few exhibitor booths hanging about the room including; Mogiana Coffee, Sugrainable, and TLC Solutions.
Time to hear from the speakers!
After dishing up some breakfast and prepping a cup of coffee or tea, attendees took a seat while the speakers shared some great insight into ESG and how crucial it is for your business. First up was Brianna Brown, Co-founder of Decade Impact. Brianna shared ways to use ESG to amplify your impact, from business models to operations.
An expert in the B Corp assessment and impact business design, she supports firms to define, measure, manage, and communicate their social and environmental impact.
Next up to speak at the Breakfast Series was David Cyr, who is a mechanical engineer with over two decades of experience servicing the pharmaceutical and food and beverage manufacturing sectors. David spoke on building sustainability for the future. He shared some obtainable ways businesses can lower their emissions for example through water conservation and building material selection.
Next up to bat was Matt Livingston, Principal Consultant at Anthesis Group.
Matt shared some great tips on ESG and circular business models. He also moderated the Q+A Panel discussion where he sat down with Brittany Hull of Earth’s Own, Darcelle Thiara of Premium Brands, and Marc Wandler of Susgrainable.
As well as sitting in on the panel, Darcelle presented where she provided insight on turning ESG into action. As the Director of Corporate Relations and ESG, Darcelle and her team oversee the execution of Premium Brands’ corporate ESG strategy and programs; while also supporting the company’s ESG committee and individual businesses with their ESG-related responsibilities. She shared how Premium Brands implements ESG through their product, people, environment and communities.
